John, out in the wilderness preparing to baptise Jesus and publicly announce his ministry, features in both Advent and Lent. Prolific French hymn writer Charles Coffin uses the story of John as he urges us to respond to both the power of Christ and the intimacy of his presence in our hearts, using the metaphor of cleaning and preparing our home for a very important guest.
I orchestrated this hymn back in February, and it’s very much in the style of my writing in my Lent album. Under the time pressure of that ‘two hymns each week’ focus, I had only developed 3 verses. So I’ve taken this opportunity to give the arrangement a little love, add a refreshing pizzicato verse, and re-record the vocals.
