It’s common to think of the Bible in terms of the stories. Things people did. Then there’s all the instructions about how to live as a follower of The Way. But I’m often surprised by how often the scriptures talk about ideas like rest and comfort. I had been thinking about Jesus lamenting over Jerusalem when I encountered this hymn, and loved both the text and the tune instantly.
It’s not a big stretch from peace and rest to comfort, so I used it in July to fit with readings from Ephesians 2 and Mark 6. I went back to Mendelssohn’s original Lied onhe worte (Opus 30 number 3) and created an arrangement that draws on it a little more than most settings of CONSOLATION.
I hope you enjoy singing it as much as I did.
