One of the best things about becoming part of a new congregation in a new city in a new country is all the wonderful new hymns you get to learn. And this is perhaps my favourite of all the hymns I’ve learned here in Brisbane. 

A traditional Basque folk carol, the text is based on the Annunciation, Luke 1:26-38, 48. It was translated into English and paraphrased by Sabine Baring-Gould around 1884. The melody has been 

Advent and Christmas time is rather cold in the Basque Country, so I’ve put my group of shepherds with their instruments in an old stone barn nestled into a hillside, keeping their flocks safe from the winter mountain storms as they retell the stories of the coming of the great Good Shepherd.
