It was chilly in the hills at night, but that was fine – it was just part of the job, so they came prepared. Warm cloaks, slingshots and a small fire to ward off predators, and their favourite pastimes. Shepherd’s pipes, probably, and other pipes of bone, reed, or wood; and of course the instrument that had been played in these hills for over a thousand years, even before the time of their great ancestor, the shepherd-king David.
And so they watched, and they rested, and they played and sang, as they did every night, and then something totally unexpected happened…
