The time of preparation draws to a close, and the momentum rises as we enter Holy Week.
All Glory, Laud, and Honour is a big sing, perhaps THE big sing of Palm Sunday. In many churches around the world, if covid allows, we process into and around the church holding high our palm branches as we sing this hymn. Depending on where you are, you may not even be able to sing with your congregation, let alone echo the singing, dancing crowds in Jerusalem two thousand years ago.
I'm hoping that you can gather, though, and start your Palm Sunday worship with this triumphal song. Because it's such a big sing, I've only set 3 verses between the choruses, and allowed a bar for you to catch your breath before the next verse. So if you are able to process, you might like to play it through twice.
This is one of the most well-known hymns by Theodulf, Bishop of Orléans. His hymnbook, Carmina, was published about 820. The versions we sing today are based on the 1854 translation by John Neale. The tune VALET WILL ICH DIR GEBEN was composed back in 1613 by Silesian musician and pastor Melchior Teschner. Many settings have been written over the centuries, and I have borrowed some ideas from JS Bach’s Chorale BWV375. The English version of the hymn tune is often called ST THEODULPH in the author’s honour.
It seems to me like an event that calls for drums and bells, so I let the percussion section play along.
