Last year while searching for some more hymns for the advent season I came across this interesting hymn. I like to make lesser known hymns easier to learn by pairing them with well known tunes. For this hymn I've paired Burton's text with CONVERSE, a tune we all learned with the text "What a Friend we have in Jesus".
Burton is technically a Victorian hymnwriter; perhaps it was his time studying for his DD in the USA that gave his texts such refreshing clarity? I have only selected three verses from Dr Burton's text. There are a couple more verses; and if folk like this hymn, I'll expand the setting in time for Advent 2024.
