Carolyn wrote this hymn for Maundy Thursday, when we remember that most unusual Passover feast that we call the Last Supper.
What an extraordinary evening! The last time Jesus eats with his disciples, and not just any meal, but the Passover feast, the time when Jews commemorate God leading them from slavery in Egypt: the sacrificial lamb that brings freedom.
And during that meal, Christ elevates the stuff of ordinary life, bread and wine, into the elements of a new feast commemorating his sacrifice that brings us freedom from sin.
And if that's not enough, he condenses the Commandments, the rules for life as the people of God, into a single new command: "Love one another as I have loved you."
Carolyn's text captures all this in 4 simple verses, which I have set to the tune HYFRYDOL, and they're available here as an audio backing track or Lyric Video ready for your church's projection system.
